Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Vitamin B6 plays a vital role in the activities of many enzymes. It is essential for the breakdown and use of proteins, carbohydrates and fats from food and for the release of stored carbohydrates for energy. Vitamin B6 is involved in the production of red blood cells and antibodies and in the maintenance of a healthy skin and healthy digestion. Vitamin B6 is also important for normal function of the nervous system and several hormones. Vitamin b6 is specifically required, along with zinc, to metabolise unsaturated (omega-3 and omega-6) fats, so if you are taking those it is a good idea to take extra vitamin b6 and zinc.
Vitamin B6 is obtained from the normal diet. Liver, chicken, wholemeal cereals, wheatgerm and eggs are particularly rich sources. Bananas, avocados and potatoes also contain vitamin B6.
Vitamin B6 deficiency may cause weakness, depression, anaemia and skin disorders. Permanent nerve damage may also occur.
Vitamin B6 supplements may be required by the elderly or by breast-fed infants. They may also be given to prevent or treat deficiencies caused by alcoholism and treatment with various medicines. Supplements may also help relieve depression caused by a deficiency of vitamin B6 in women taking oestrogen-containing oral contraceptives and they may also help to relieve pre-menstrual irritability, depression and breast-tenderness.
Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, before using Vitamin B6.
There is no safety information on the use of Vitamin B6 in pregnancy, but it has been widely used for many years without apparent ill consequence. Vitamin B6 should be used with caution during pregnancy - discuss with your doctor.
Vitamin B6 interacts with various medications. If you are on medication of any sort, see your doctor first before taking vitamin B6.
Vitamin B6 should definitely not be taken, or taken with extreme caution, in low doses and with medical advice, by people with epilepsy. In the extreme, high-dose vitamin B6 might trigger an epileptic fit in people with this problem.
