Pau d'Arco
Pau D'Arco (Tabebuia impetiginosa) also known as the 'divine bark,' has been used for centuries by American Indians for healing. It is the bark from a tree with oval, golden-veined leaves and clusters of dangling purple flowers. Early medicine men would have peeled the tree's bark in long strips. They separated the inner and outer layers of bark and used the inner flesh to make healing teas. It was the Incas who gave Pau D'Arco its divine name.
Whether we choose to believe in the tree's divine properties or not, there is an abundance of physical properties encapsulated in the plant which are of medicinal benefit to us. Pau d'arco inner bark is also rich in nutrients including iron, calcium, selenium, zinc vitamins A, B-complex and C, magnesium potassium and sodium. Its combination of properties makes it antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal, thus giving it a reputation as immune system stimulant and disease fighter.
Lapachol, a phytochemical contained in the inner bark, has been well tested and documented as being antiabscess, anticarcinomic, antiedemic, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antiseptic, antitumor, antiviral, bactericide, fungicide, insectifuge, pesticide, respiradepressant, termiticide, and viricide. Lapachol from pau d'arco has also been studied for its effects in cancer. Although it contains two compounds which have anticancer properties, the effective dosage for this disease is toxic. Therefore, pau d'arco cannot currently be recommended as a treatment for cancer. Besides lapachol, Pau D'Arco contains at least 20 other active constituents to which are attributed other actions.
