Alfalfa is a plant that grows in most conditions, and is commonly used as a supplement because it has very long roots, which means that it picks up minerals from deep down in the soil and hence is very high in minerals. Alfalfa is also used as a detoxifier; the reason for this is that alfalfa is usually harvested while it is quite a young plant, and this means that it is very high in enzymes that among other things help digestion. Alfalfa is also high in chlorophyll, which is also detoxifying.
Alfalfa has therapeutic uses as both food and medicine. It is rich in vitamins, particularly A, B and C and also Vitamin K. It is believed to contain a higher mineral content than most grains and is a natural source of calcium, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus. Alfalfa has therapeutic uses for a wide range of conditions.
Alfalfa is a traditional digestive tonic, and helps normalise appetite - thus it is good for people who are underweight, or for people who have lost a lot of weight after major surgery.
Alfalfa helps the condition of the bones and joints, because of its high vitamin and mineral content.
Alfalfa is technically a legume (one of the peas and beans family) and as you might expect, this means alfalfa is high in phyto-oestrogens; which means that it may help women with various hormonal problems.
Alfalfa is also a plant that is good for the environment. Like a lot of leguminous plants, alfalfa fixes nitrogen in its roots - which means that the soil will be more fertile after it's harvested than before it was grown. It also requires not much water and added nutrients.
Alfalfa should be used with extreme caution, and preferably after consulting a doctor, if you are taking anticoagulants - particularly warfarin. This is because alfalfa contains large amounts of vitamin K, which increases clotting rate.
